What kind of maintenance does a belt drive require?

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Getting a motorcycle w/ a belt drive (2009 Kawasaki Vulcan 900)Just wondering what kind of maintenance these require.I currently have a shaft drive , which is easy to maintain.

Just keep it tensioned clean and it will last years with almost no maintenance. I have had belts on several Harleys, one Buell, and an old Kawasaki 440. None of them had any issues. They aren’t as easy and trouble free as a shaft, but they are a million times easier and cleaner than a chain.

How much of the home building process can be done without the use of contractors?

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Me and my Fiance want to build a house on our land but we want to save money by doing some of the building process on our own.
Of course we want the foundations and roofs and what not done professionally but what things could we do on our own to save money without the use of contractors? Indoor and Outdoor.

You can do any or all if you d like. Do what ever your qualified to do. BUT, some towns, cities or townships may very well require a licensed trade in some areas such as electrician and plumber. These you may need some one.You may also be required to have a builders license. It s a fairly simple process of taking some classes and taking a test. All these thing you need to check into.GL

What maintenance do people do for a trip?

Sunday, October 11th, 2009

I want to go on a trip this summer may be June or august What maintenance should I do so It don’t break down on the road I have a 99 s10 blazer blue, 4 wheel drive. I live in MN and want to go to Wisconsin to the dells
I have 1495000 miles

The basics should be fine.
Maybe an oil change if you have not done one in a while, I like to run SeaFoam through my gas and a little in the oil once a year. You might want to give your car a treat and do that before hand.
Check the oil. It should be up to the proper level and NOT black. You want it to be at least a little golden.
Check your other liquid levels. All the dipsticks you see, check them.
Check your fanbelt. Just make sure it looks good and not worn.
Look at your tires. Are they in good shape? Decent tread and even wear? Inflated properly?
That should do ya.

Have fun at the Dells ^_^ It’s a total zoo in the summer but it’s quite a place to visit.

What would happen if I built an unconventional house that did not meet the building codes?

Friday, October 9th, 2009

I am interested in a building a house using non-traditional and unconventional building methods. This house probably would not meet the local building codes. I already understand that securing any necessary financing to build the house would be difficult and that it would also be more difficult to insure the house once built. What I am not sure of is how the local government would react if I built a house without any effort to satisfy the building codes. Would there be any legal action taken against me? Would they try to prevent me from occupying my own home?

First, they would not allow you to move in. Before you can move into new construction, the local gvpt issues a permit that shows that the home meets building code. Without this permit, you can’t live there.

NO, you can’t just move in. They can have the building condemned and remove you from the building.

And in some cases, if it’s determined that it is unsafe, have it torn down and then sue you for the cost.

How many Handicapped parking spaces is a building allowed to have in New York State?

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

If there was a parking lot to a building, how many Handicapped Spaces are allowed to be to one building? Meaning, if the owner wished to make every parking space to a building Handicapped, is he allowed to do so freely?

There is no maximum number but there are minimum numbers as prescribed by the Americans with Disabilities Act as listed in this chart:

One in every eight, but not less than one, parking space must be van accessible with a designated handicap sign and an access aisle 96" wide.

Total Spaces in Lot Accessible Spaces Required
1-25 1 van
26-50 1 std. + 1 van
51 - 75 2 std. + 1 van
76-100 3 std. + 1 van
101-150 4 std. + 1 van
151-200 5 std. + 1 van
201-300 6 std. + 1 van
301-400 7 std. + 1 van
401-500 7 std. + 2 van
501-1000 2% of total spaces*
1001 and over 20 + (1 per 100 over 1000)*

Standard Accessible (std.) parking space is 8 foot minimum + 5 foot access aisle.

I suppose an owner could make all spaces for only handicapped vehicles if that was the only people that would be wanting to park in that lot. New York State follows the Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines.

How should I go about building my own home?

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

I have been purchasing and reading books on natural building techniques over the past month, and it seems to be exactly what I would like to do in my lifetime. What locations in the U.S. would be most ideal for a house with the following utilizations and materials:

-Solar power (panels), heating (good sunshine, heat)
-Earthbag building for house
-Wind power
-Radiant heating in the floor
-Rainwater collection and storage (good rainfall)
-Composting toilet
-Quality soil for gardening and perhaps livestock/animals

Thank you in advance.

Unless you’ve got construction experience building a house on your own might not be the best idea. Your best bet is to do some research about location and then find a contractor that is familiar with "green" building techniques and let him do the work. One person building a house is a years long project even if you are familiar with the myriad construction trades involved in doing it.
