What kind of used car has good gas mileage, low maintenance costs and would be generally inexpensive?

So far I have looked at the Cavalier and the Saturn SC2.

Anyone have any advice or website I can go to that has

the estimated maintenance costs per year for cars?

Honda Civic! There is no better way to go. Ive had mine and its perfect. Im a college student and i do not have that much money. Gas and maintenance cost is perfect.

Any kind of honda would be a great candidate. They run for ever if you maintenance them right, and they are fairly inexpensive and easy to repair.

Yes, the civic is a ‘good bet’ in the Consumer Reports Used Car Buyers Guide, also are toyota corollas, but the american made quality has been with ford, not that my saturn ion has been too shabby, but the sl was the one I heard most of the singing about.

Car and Driver called the new Chevy Malibu "The Accord killer", so that would be my vote for an American car. I can vouch for chevy myself, having put 400k miles on one of their trucks.
I wouldnt go for a Civic, it TECHNICALLY is a good car, but in reality you have to pay more for the same insurance coverage and you are several times more likely to get ticketed.
Also, the Civic and Accord are stolen more than any other models of cars. Acuras are also in the top 10 most stolen cars.
